SkinPen® Micro-Needling Aftercare

SkinPen® Overview

SkinPen® is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the face and body. The SkinPen device intentionally creates very superficial “micro-injuries” to the outermost layer of the skin to induce the healing process, automatically triggering new collagen production. According to Harvard Health, patients experience between 45 and 55 percent improvement in collagen and elastin after just one treatment.

Micro-needling has been shown to:

  • Reduce the visibility of acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles
  • Diminish hyper-pigmentation
  • Improve skin tone and texture, resulting in smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin

Micro-needling has been safely used in a wide variety of patient types, including patients of all skin types. 3-6 treatments are recommended for best results, up to 6 for more severe scarring and stretch marks. For anti-aging, 1-2 treatments per year are recommended.

Procedural Description

Prior to your SkinPen procedure, please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours prior to the procedure. Call our office to reschedule if you have sunburn.
  • Wait 2 weeks after spray or self-tanning lotions before your SkinPen procedure.
  • Discontinue topical products containing Retin-A, Retinol, or Vitamin A for at least 7 days prior.
  • Wait at least six months after isotretinoin (Accutane) use, as it may impair wound healing and increase risk of scar tissue.

Post-Procedure Care

  • Keep your skin clean of cosmetics or chemical sunscreen for 48 hours post-procedure. Ask your provider for a recommended physical sunscreen.
  • This procedure may not be performed on active breakouts or open lesions. Consult your aesthetician if this applies.
  • Consider using Levicyn™ Antimicrobial Dermal Spray to cleanse, moisten, and reduce infection risk if skin is congested or oily.
  • Avoid NSAIDs (Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve) and supplements such as fish oil, which may increase bruising and bleeding.
  • Enhance recovery with Core Recovery Complex, a serum with growth factors and cytokines formulated to aid post-procedure healing.

Before Your Treatment

  • Day 1: Skin may be red and flushed. Pinpoint bleeding may occur. Do not apply makeup for at least 12 hours, preferably 3-4 days.
  • Day 2: Red or pink hue may persist like moderate sunburn. Swelling and slight bruising may occur. Minor scratches and dryness are normal.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • Wash hands with warm, soapy water. Use a gentle cleanser and wash your face using only fingers.
  • Gently massage the face with lukewarm or cold water to remove serum and debris. Avoid scrubs, washcloths, or Clarisonic brushes.
  • Cleanse treated areas twice daily. Avoid exfoliating products or retinol for 7-10 days.
  • Apply clean, cold compresses for comfort. Redness may last slightly longer on neck or décolletage.
  • Apply Levicyn spray or gel 2-3 times a day until skin is visibly healed.
  • Additional recommended products: Phyto-C O-live Gel, hyaluronic serums, Honey Skincare Lab’s Remedy and Rescue Kit, or Alastin Skin Nectar.
  • Take Arnica up to 7 days post-treatment to reduce bruising and inflammation.
  • Avoid sun exposure and use physical sunscreen with SPF 40+, reapplying every 2 hours. Wear a hat for extra protection.
  • After 4-5 days, resume regular skincare products as tolerated. Mineral makeup or tinted mineral SPF may be applied 12-48 hours post-treatment.
  • Do not exercise for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid gyms for 48-72 hours, as well as saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, or showers until redness subsides.
  • Avoid waxing, facials, peels, lasers, and other abrasive treatments until two weeks post-procedure.
  • Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily to support cell regeneration.
  • If any adverse events occur, contact The Groomed Goddess Medi-Spa at (305) 942-9045.
